Supporting Families and Friends of Individuals with Addictions
C.R.A.F.T. (Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training) is a therapeutic approach initially developed for concerned families and close friends of people with substance use problems. Research has shown that various components can also be effective for use with families of those experiencing behavioural addiction such as gambling. This approach is positive and motivational in its focus, and strategically helps families and friends (concerned significant others) to work smarter, not harder, with their loved ones who are suffering from and substance and behavioural addiction.
This valuable training was a joint effort between Mental Health and Addictions Research & Education Department (Health PEI) and The PEI Gambling Support Unit (PEI Department of Health and Wellness) and was facilitated by Registered Clinical Psychologists Tammy Kontuk and Greg Purvis.
Over 60 attendees from across Prince Edward Island represented:
- Health PEI: Mental Health and Addictions Clinicians (youth, adult and family addictions counsellors)
- Government of PEI (social workers, student well-being team, gambling support unit)
