Talking with youth about gambling

Talking Makes a Difference!

A bet on a hockey game, a friendly card game, or a virtual loot box may seem harmless, but they can lead to serious problems. Raise the issue of gambling with youth before it becomes a problem.

How to Start a Conversation

Initiating open dialogues early helps youth navigate the modern landscape of gaming, sports betting, and digital wagers safely. Here are practical ways to guide the discussion.

1

Choose the Right Time

Initiate conversation after seeing a commercial about gambling, during a casual walk, on the couch after playing a video game together, or washing dishes after a meal.

2

Listen

Active listening is essential. Youth will be much more receptive when the discussion is conversational and they feel their input is valued.

3

Keep It Short

Concise conversations drive the message home effectively. Long-winded lectures may cause teens to tune out before you finish.

4

Be Relevant

Tailor the conversation to their interests. If your child plays sports video games, discuss eSports betting or loot boxes relevant to their gaming experience.

5

Talk About the Risks

Openly discuss the financial and personal risks posed by non-casino games, like sports betting, poker, online gambling, and interactive gaming elements.

6

Reveal Hidden Signs

Educate them on warning signs of a developing problem, such as hiding debts, borrowing money, or skipping classes or work.

7

Lead by Example

Youth learn directly from your habits. If you talk about responsible gambling and maintain a plan to protect yourself, they are likely to follow suit.
