Video Games & Gambling Risks
Understanding how loot boxes, in-game upgrades, and simulated casino games connect modern youth video gaming to gambling risks.
Understanding Video Games
Many youth enjoy video gaming as a form of entertainment – the sights, sounds, and content are often fun and engaging. Video games are available in a variety of genres that appeal to everyone: digital sports games, card games, board games, simulations (like flight simulators), everyday life simulations, interactive movies or TV shows, and augmented or virtual reality platforms.
In essence, video games are interactive digital entertainment programs that you can play alone, 1-to-1, in groups, in-person, online, or in VR using phones, tablets, computers, or gaming consoles like PlayStation, Xbox, or portable systems.
Recognizing Gambling in Video Games
Here are some key ways gambling mechanics are simulated in popular video games:
Loot Boxes or Crates
A reward acquired by winning or buying during a game. The player does not know what is inside, mirroring gambling by exchanging value for an unknown item. Costs can add up quickly when purchasing with real money.
In-Game Upgrades
Better weapons, armor, strengths, and skins. Obtaining upgrades makes characters more powerful and desirable, and they can sometimes be traded or sold online for real money.
Simulated Casino Games
Games that look and work like casino games, but use in-game currency (coins, jewels, points). Players may spend real money to unlock special features or collect more points.
Why Is It Important?
Youth see value and purpose in loot boxes, upgrades, and simulated casino games because they provide specific advantages:
The potential for progression from video games to online gaming for money and then to gambling can cause serious harms such as addiction. Studies show that young people who participate in free-to-play games, purchase loot boxes, and play simulated gambling games are more likely to gamble.
Due to these risks, some jurisdictions (such as Belgium in 2018) have classified loot boxes as gambling products and banned them.
